Scholarship
Please join me in congratulating the five students who received the 2015 Atlanta alumni scholarship. They are:
Lelia Hart
Madison Roney
Kimberlynn Criss
Sydney Lawings
Carly Moon
Each student received $1000 from the Atlanta Chapter.
I would also like to take a personally thank Jan Johnson and Cherie Williams both from the “Mighty Ogre VIII Class of 1994” for chairing the scholarship committee for the last two years. Their organization and leadership skills created an efficient process that includes an online application, interviews and a requirement of community services. They will be succeed by George Pugh and Koy Billings.
Applications for the Atlanta Chapter scholarship will open in April.
Changes to National Alumni elections
In January, the National Hampton Alumni Association voted to amend the national by-laws concerning who was eligible to vote in national alumni elections. Previous language stipulated that anyone who graduate from Hampton in good standing good vote in national alumni elections. The new language states anyone who graduated in good standing from Hampton and have made a financial contribution to the school within the last five years.
The change is effective for the next national alumni election.

Elections for local chapter and the SouthEast Region will be this year. Nominations for local chapter positions will open at the March meeting and elections will be in April. The Retool Your School program was initiated to provide support for campus improvement projects to the nation’s HBCUs. Schools are categorized into one of three clusters depending on the student population. This year’s program is offering one $50,000, one $30,000 and one $20,000 grant to three schools in each cluster. Also for the first time this year, the non-winning qualified schools who submit their applications and receive a minimum of 100 votes, will receive a $1,000 Home Depot gift card.
Last year, HU won a $10,000 grant to install energy efficient windows in McGrew Towers and in 2010 the University won a $10,000 grant that was used to renovate the iron gating and new landscaping around Emancipation Oak. This year, Hampton hopes to use the grant money to:
- Install cell phone charging stations across campus
- Create a Booker T. Washington Memorial Garden
- Install custom-designed benches across campus.
Online voting for the program will be from February 26 to April 24, 2018 by clicking here. You can also vote via social media (Twitter, Facebook & Instagram) by using the hashtag #Hampton_RYS16. VOTE OFTEN.
The winners will be announced on May 18, 2018.
